Departments across the States underspent their 2014 budgets by £26 million.
£13 million of those savings will stay with departments to fund ongoing projects with the other half of the amount being transferred back to a central fund (the Consolidation Fund), which the States has a legal obligation to keep in balance.
Among the provision and projects that will benefit from the funds staying with the departments are:
- Children's Services
- an increase in the number of Trackers Apprenticeships
- the Independent Jersey Care Inquiry
- the creation of a Jersey Aircraft Registry
The Minister for Treasury and Resources, Senator Alan Maclean, said "Over the coming year all States Departments are going to have to tackle the challenge of delivering 2% saving across their budgets and doing so in a way that maintains their provision at a high level. The underspends from 2014 will give departments improved flexibility in delivering key services.
"We will continue to strengthen our budgeting processes across the States and departments will work together to find the savings that will be needed throughout this year and into the next Medium Term Financial Plan."
