The Chief Minister, Senator Ian Gorst, has expressed his sympathy for the people of Nepal following Saturday’s devastating earthquake and his relief that two Jersey citizens currently in the country are safe and well.
"Our thoughts are with the people of Nepal, most especially, with those families there and around the world who are still waiting for news of loved ones. Locally, it is, of course, a relief to have heard that two Jersey women known to be in Nepal, Leonie Hervé and Sheri Burt, are safe. In liaison with the emergency unit of the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, we will make every effort to ensure that they can travel home as soon as they want, and it is possible to do so.
"It is also extremely welcome news that the Jersey Overseas Aid Commission has responded rapidly to this crisis by allocating £90,000 in emergency aid, and I am sure that many Islanders will also be donating to appeals which will help the people of Nepal rebuild their homes and their lives."
