Law change for parking payments

18 February 2015

New parking payment systems could be available later in 2015 once a tender process and law change have taken place.

Transport and Technical Services are nearly ready to go out to tender for a parking payment system that it hopes could be in operation by late summer.

The law currently only allows for the use of paycards and the Automatic Number Registration System (ANPR) in operation in Sand Street car park and needs to be changed to allow companies with other systems to tender for the contract.

Flexible payment system

The department has learned a lot from Sand Street trial that has been operating since the end of 2012 and this has helped with the preparation of the tender. TTS are keen to get the most suitable system for Jersey at the best price so is interested in obtaining tenders for any suitable technological solution and the change in law will make this possible.

Transport and Technical Services Minister, Deputy Eddie Noel, said “I am keen to introduce a flexible parking payment system that will provide customers with a more versatile method of use as soon as possible. I hope that we will start introducing such a system firstly into our car parks and then look to extending it to on-street.”
