Transport and Technical Services (TTS) is asking for comments from the public on proposals to establish one hour free parking on the upper level of the Red Houses Car Park at St Brelade.
The upper level has 47 spaces and is currently a paycard car park. Waitrose would like to lease spaces and release these spaces to the public as free one hour disc parking. The spaces would not be used by Waitrose staff.
In the proposal seven spaces would be retained for all day and season ticket parking and the remaining 40 spaces would be used by Waitrose. Recent research has shown that there are only about two vehicles that stay all day and that the upper level of the car park is, on average, only 15% full.
Disabled access
As part of the agreement Waitrose has agreed to provide disabled access improvements to the car park as well as road crossing improvements in Route Orange which is subject to a planning application and any comments on this should be addressed through the planning application process.
The policing, enforcement and administration would still be carried out by TTS.
The Co-op currently leases the lower level of the car park and releases these spaces for free one hour disc parking in a similar way to the Waitrose proposal.
The consultation period which closes on Friday 28 August.
