Jersey to hold town planning conference

Planners, architects, heritage specialists and builders will be among those discussing the regeneration of St Helier at a conference next month.

The Royal Town Planning Institute’s (RTPI) South West branch is holding a conference in Jersey. It coincides with the 50th anniversary of the introduction of planning and building laws for Jersey, marked this year.

The title of the RTPI’s conference on 15 May is 'Planning for Growth in Sensitive Locations'. Speakers from the UK and Jersey will look at some of the challenges faced in promoting and delivering sustainable growth in sensitive places and how planners in both the UK and the Channel Islands have responded.

The Department of the Environment’s Policy, Projects and Historic Environment Director, Kevin Pilley, who will be speaking at the event, said “The conference will hear from people who’ve been involved in the challenge of regenerating sensitive urban areas and what they’ve learnt from those projects.

“As part of that discussion, we’ll be sharing the ideas and information from Jersey about work we’ve done in parts of St Helier and the challenges that we face to make it a more desirable place to work, live in, and visit, and how, with input from residents, businesses, and community groups, we can work together to improve St Helier.”
