New features of the on going St Mary’s Village Scheme can now be seen following the reopening of the road.
One of the main elements of the work so far is an oval granite feature embedded at the key junction near the parish church and St Mary’s Country Inn.
Villagers were concerned about how difficult it was to cross at this point, particularly when walking children to school. The square is designed to enhance the character of the area and act as a traffic calming measure.
The road has been realigned to make it safer when exiting Rue De L’Eglise and the drainage has also been improved.
Improvement Board
The elements of the Scheme were developed with parishioners over a year-long consultation period led by the Community based St Mary’s Village Improvement Board which included the Constable and the Deputy.
New granite pavements have also been created and the ‘virtual’ footpath has been extended to provide a better pedestrian route from Rue de la Vallée and make this road visibly narrower now that it is one way only.
The wooden bus shelter is already being used and is in keeping with a rural parish.
Next Phase
After the Easter holidays work will continue on the project moving on to La Verte Rue opposite the school for the construction of a raised area of road and landscape features. A network of off-road footpaths are also included in the project.
Assistant Minister for Transport and Technical Services, Deputy Richard Rondel, said "It is great to see this project taking shape. It’s still early days and there is some way to go before the full impact of the scheme will be realised for the community."
St Mary Deputy David Johnson added "Whilst the design and traffic measures were agreed before my term in office, I congratulate the Constable, Project Board and TTS on achieving an attractive result which forms an integral part of the overall plan to make movement around the village easier and safer for all."
