More than 150 islanders have bought electric bikes under the car2cycle discount scheme since it was launched in June. A further 150 people have applied for grants but haven't bought their bikes yet.
The scheme offers a 20% discount off the cost of an electric bike up to a maximum of £300. The Department for Infrastructure has a target of enabling grants for up to 500 bikes over a three year period.
Deputy Eddie Noel, Minister for Infrastructure said “I am pleased with the uptake of the car2cycle scheme and have heard some positive testimonials over the last two months. My Department will shortly be issuing a survey to those applicants who have purchased an E bike under the scheme so that we can evidence any changes in commuter habits, and what further actions are needed to encourage more cycling in Jersey.”
Jersey Post are also supporting E bikes in Jersey and are adding 20 new electric bikes to their work fleet.
E bikes are more sustainable as they have zero emissions, no parking fees or petrol costs and they offer a healthy alternative for commuting by make cycling easier.
Anyone interested in buying an E bike with the up to £300 discount must complete an application form and take this along with photo identification and proof of address to Sand Street Parking Control or Driver and Vehicle Standards (DVS). Once an application form is approved, applicants have four weeks to redeem the discount at participating retailers. Anyone needing an extension to the redemption period of an extra four weeks, should take their application form to DVS or Parking Control.
