With big tides coming up this weekend fishermen are reminded to make sure they know the rules in place for the fishing they are doing.
Low water fishermen are reminded that there is a maximum daily limit of 20 ormers per person with a maximum of 100 ormers on any boat at one time. The ormering tides can be found on the States website gov.je.
In addition, for those wishing to set trots or beach set nets, a maximum limit of 50 hooks and 100 metres of net is now in place. There is also a minimum mesh size of 110mm for nets set on the beach.
Recreational fishermen should also be aware that the bag limit for bass (currently set at 1 fish per person per day) applies - no matter what type of fishing is done.
Assistant Director Marine Resources Greg Morel said "These measures were approved in the States in the summer and are part of ongoing work to protect our valuable marine resources for the future."
Minimum sizes continue to apply for commonly caught species including ormer (9cm) and bass (42cm).
The Department of the Environment is aware that other measures relating to bass have been under discussion at the wider EU level but it is understood nothing has been agreed to date.
Minister for the Environment, Deputy Steve Luce said "I am aware that some of these management measures can be contentious but the regulations are based on best practice and are in place to ensure we can protect and conserve these iconic species for generations to come."
