The Government of Jersey welcomes the commitment made by the UK Government in its Brexit position paper ‘Northern Ireland and Ireland’ to reach a timely agreement with the EU on the preservation of the Common Travel Area and associated rights, and for this to be acknowledged in the final Withdrawal Agreement.
The Common Travel Area
The Common Travel Area allows free movement for British and Irish citizens between the UK, Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands, without the need for formal immigration controls or visas. Maintaining the Common Travel Area and avoiding the imposition of routine immigration controls – particularly between the Island and the UK – is a key priority for Jersey and has been the subject of ongoing discussion between officials in the Island and the United Kingdom.
British Irish Council
Whilst the wider matter of border controls on the Island of Ireland and preservation of the Belfast (Good Friday) Agreement is a matter for the UK and Irish Governments, Jersey is an active member of the British Irish Council. This Council was established as part of the Good Friday Agreement to promote positive, practical relationships among the people of the islands, and to provide a forum for consultation and co-operation, and the Government of Jersey is fully committed to fulfilling its membership responsibilities.
