The Government of Jersey is to launch a substantial public engagement exercise, designed to better understand public hopes, concerns and questions arising from Brexit.
The cross-departmental campaign will provide an interactive forum for debate with direct answers being supplied by officials and Ministers.
Jersey: Let’s Talk Brexit will be accessible across various forms of social media, where Islanders are encouraged to tweet, comment and respond to topics and statistics that will be published to generate discussion. In addition, short interviews with members of the public will be filmed around the Island and updates circulated through the media.
Members of the public will be able to email, call or write to the Let’s Talk Brexit team.
The Minister for External Relations, Senator Sir Philip Bailhache, said “I am delighted to launch Jersey: Let’s Talk Brexit. The government has made a clear commitment to communicate with the public on our preparations for Brexit and this campaign is designed to achieve exactly that aim. We will be utilising all forms of communication available to us and our team will be ensuring that all questions and comments are considered.”
A public questionnaire, available in both electronic and print copy, will be made available as the campaign progresses, the public will be able to engage the Minister for External Relations in a radio ‘hot seat’ broadcast, and schools and other public groups will be invited to participate in meetings to directly question Ministers.
Individual Ministers will also participate in the campaign by filming responses to the vox pop videos and answering some of the questions posted on social media or through more traditional methods of communication.
It is hoped that Islanders from all backgrounds, age groups and sectors will participate in the campaign and generate critical discussion about the implications and opportunities of Brexit for Jersey.
The campaign will be running across the coming four months, with further engagement planned for Autumn 2017.
