From Monday 23 October the traffic lights controlling the Gloucester Street and Esplanade junction will be switched off for the replacement of the equipment.
All traffic going through the junction will be controlled by temporary traffic lights.
Due to the limitations of temporary traffic lights, the junction will not be controlled as well as usual.
There will also be some lane closures to enable staff to work safely.
As such, the Department for Infrastructure is expecting severe delays during the works and asks motorists to adjust journey times accordingly.
The existing equipment has reached the end of its working life meaning that replacing the traffic lights is essential.
The new lights and controlling equipment will result in lights which are both brighter and more energy efficient.
The work has been scheduled during half term when there is less traffic.
