The Department for Infrastructure (DfI) started work on Tuesday 3 January to widen the western side pavement in Conway Street.
This Future St Helier project will provide more space for pedestrians on this busy route which links the central town precinct to the bus station and Liberty Wharf.
The project not only includes the widening of the pavement on the west side of Conway Street by an average of a metre between Commercial Street and Broad Street, but also some associated drainage work and the relocation of the existing Conway Street unloading bay into Wharf Street. The work will be undertaken in 15m sections to minimise disruption, commencing at the Commercial Street end.
Existing kerbs will be taken up and re-laid and new granite paving laid with drainage works undertaken as required.
Access to businesses will be maintained at all times.
Conway Street will remain open for the full duration of the 10 -12 week project, except for a number of selected Sundays. These closures will be used for disruptive works with the first closure being on the 8 January. Work will not commence until 10am on these Sunday closures.
The Conway Street unloading bay will be closed from Tuesday 3 January to provide working space and storage for the project. However, a permanent replacement will be available nearby in Wharf Street. The unloading bay at the end of Commercial Street will also be closed for three weeks to enable some adjustments that are needed to the junction with Conway Street. On completion this unloading bay will be reinstated.
Deputy Eddie Noel, Minister for Infrastructure said, “I am pleased we are able to get this project underway so soon in the new year, it will provide great benefit for pedestrians. The west side pavement gets about three times as much use as the east and in busy lunchtimes it can be difficult for people to pass each other so it is much needed".
