Following extensive consultations, the Department for Infrastructure and the Parish of St Clement are creating safer walking and cycling routes around St Clement’s and St Christopher’s primary schools and Le Rocquier secondary school.
Work begins on Monday 24 July on a shared cycle and walking route, which will start at St Clement Parish Hall, pass through Le Rocquier playing fields and come out on to Pontorson Lane at the northern end of the playing fields.
Traffic calming will be installed later in the summer on Pontorson Lane, Rue de la Croix and Rue de Maupertuis to provide a route from Le Squez.
Around 400 students at Le Rocquier School come from the Le Marais/Le Squez area but only 140 regularly walk or cycle. A similar number use the same route by car but could walk or cycle. This number is likely to increase with new housing developments.
With improved walking and cycling links, active student travel will increase, congestion will reduce and there will be health benefits.
The traffic calming includes the installation of raised tables on
- Samares Lane at the junction with Rue de Maupertuis and Rue de la Croix
- Pontorson Lane at the junction of Rue de la Croix and Rue de la Chapelle
- Pontorson Lane between the junction and the new school path
There will also be a 12-month trial of closing Rue de Maupertuis to through traffic at the double bends.
Minister for Infrastructure, Deputy Eddie Noel, said “We have worked with the Parish of St Clement to make these important improvements, which will particularly benefit the young people of the parish.”
