All Island residents are invited to a two-day event next month focusing on Jersey’s wildlife.
Wild About Jersey, on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 February, is an event where people can meet and learn about protecting and conserving Jersey’s plant and animal life. There will be stalls, displays, activities, talks and training workshops given by a range of local and national speakers, offering advice and information in helping to protect Jersey’s natural environment.
A series of talks on Saturday and Sunday morning will showcase current environmental projects that people can learn more about or get involved with. These include:
- Jersey grass snakes and toads
- Getting children interested in nature
- Birds on the Edge
- Earthworm watch
- Barn owl conservation
In the afternoon on both days the event will offer information and training to inspire people to join a growing global band of citizen scientists gathering information vital to protecting and improving our environment. This ranges from monitoring toads, and counting plants to surveying Jersey’s butterfly species.
The event takes place between 9.30 and 3.30 at Acorn Enterprises, Trinity. It is free and there’s no need to book.
Research Ecologist for the Department of the Environment, Nina Cornish, said “Many hundreds of Islanders are already playing a crucial part in helping protect and improve the environment that we know people in Jersey value so much.
“This event is partly about celebrating their work, but it’s also about getting more people involved by showing them how varied and fascinating the projects are and how easily they can contribute to important scientific research. We’ve got experts in their field doing training at the event, so people will walk away with a new set of skills to start making a difference right now.”
