Current local weather conditions, high thermal instability and high levels of beetle flight over the Cotentin Peninsula in France have prompted the Department of the Environment to issue a formal 'Colorado beetle warning' for the next 5 days.
Colorado beetles are destructive pests of potato crops, and are also known to cause considerable damage to tomato crops. Farmers are being asked to ensure that all field workers are aware of what the adult beetles look like.
States agricultural inspectors will be making coastal checks over the coming days but all Islanders are being asked to be vigilant and to report any sightings of the beetles.
Sightings can be reported to States agricultural inspectors or directly to the department at environment@gov.je.
