At 5:40am today (Sunday 18 March 2018) a baby boy was left in the waiting area of the Emergency Department at the General Hospital for hospital staff to find.
The baby was very recently born and still had the umbilical cord attached.
He has been medically assessed and is described as being fit and well, and is being cared for.
The baby's mother is asked to contact the midwife directly on 01534 442456.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Police on 01534 612200 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Police CCTV shows what’s believed to be two women walking through the Parade Gardens from the direction of Rouge Bouillon and one seen carrying the baby. The woman carrying the baby is then seen to enter the Emergency Department alone and exiting shortly afterwards without the baby at the above time.
CCTV released, together with this appeal, shows both women waiting at the entrance of Emergency Department before taking the baby in. The CCTV shows at the same time:
a man walking from the direction of Gloucester Street and entering Emergency Department immediately before the woman carrying the baby
another woman using the cashpoint outside of the hospital. She then gets into a red car (make, model and registration unknown) and drives off towards Gloucester Street.
The Police would like to hear from both this man and woman to see if they saw anything and if they can help.
Both women are then seen to meet up a short distance from the front door of Emergency Department and walk back into the Parade towards Cannon Street.
Superintendent James Wileman said: "We are extremely worried about the welfare of the mother. She may have been one of the two people who left the baby in the care of the Emergency Department but this cannot be confirmed.
"I want to appeal directly to the mother so that we can offer her medical and emotional support. We know to do this she must have been desperate and by leaving the baby at the hospital we know she wanted him to be looked after and to know he was safe so our paramount concern now is for the mother’s safety and welfare."
Midwife Jan Auffret said: "We are concerned about the health of the mother of the baby boy and are appealing for her to come forward. You can contact me directly and I will be available to talk to you on 01534 442456. We would like to reassure mum that the baby boy is currently being cared for and looked after and is doing well. We want to ensure that mum is provided with the medical support she needs."
The overriding concern is to make sure the mother is safe and well and that remains the overriding purpose of this appeal and police efforts. Police will be working with partners agencies to try and find the mother so that support can be offered. The police would also like to appear to anyone else who may have information that could lead to the mother being identified.
