Ministers have responded to an E-Petition asking for a ‘Rental Price Cap Law’ which generated more than 1,000 signatures.
The Housing Minister, Senator Sam Mezéc has confirmed that he will pursue policies that aim to improve the standard of living for islanders, including working with the Chief Minister to establish an Affordable Housing Policy Board.
Senator Mezéc said: “I am determined to improve the quality and affordability of housing and to address some of the statistics in the most recent Income Distribution Survey, which measured housing and affordability.”
Work is underway to improve rental housing; for example, new legislation such as the Public Health and Safety (Rented Dwellings) Law, and an expansion of the Discrimination Law to protect tenants with children.
There is also work continuing to provide more affordable housing, to bring long-term vacant properties back into use and to improve the affordability and quality of rental housing in the island.
The full response to the petition can be found here.
