Government seeks trainee accountants

07 October 2019

Graduates and school leavers who would like to become qualified accountants are being encouraged to apply for a new government training scheme.

The Developing Accountants programme, which launches this October, will offer trainees the chance to complete their accountancy qualifications while gaining experience from across the government’s Treasury and Exchequer department. Students will receive a competitive salary, one-to-one mentoring, and the opportunity to work in an interesting and supportive environment.

Richard Bell, Treasurer of the States said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for islanders looking to start a career in finance, where they will be able to work on issues that really matter for Jersey. Our Developing Accountants will work on projects across government, gaining an understanding of different areas of accountancy, while also completing a professional qualification.”

Trainees will receive full support during their studies and will follow a long-term career progression plan, with salary increases and promotions as they pass examinations and develop their experience.

Mr. Bell added: “This is a great chance to embark on an exciting and rewarding career. We’re keen to encourage school leavers, graduates and career changers from a range of academic, cultural and social backgrounds to apply. I’d encourage anyone with a keen interest in finance, and a desire to learn, to consider putting themselves forward.”

Students can apply for roles at two different levels, to become either a Certified Accounting Technician, or a Chartered Accountant. Those wishing to apply to become a Certified Accounting Technician must have completed their GCSEs, and have achieved a 6 or above in English and Maths. Those wishing to become a Chartered Accountant must have a minimum of BBB at A-level, or have already achieved Certified Accounting Technician status.

The scheme is open to any islander who meets the entry requirements, and who is eligible to work in Jersey. Anyone wishing to apply can do so online through the Government of Jersey website. Those who apply can have the opportunity to visit the Treasury and Exchequer and meet some of the team prior to interview.
