The Minister for the Environment, Deputy John Young, will join politicians from across Britain and Ireland to discuss a number of marine environment issues.
The British-Irish Council Marine Litter Symposium will take place next week [Friday 22 February] at Strathclyde University Technology and Innovation Centre, Glasgow.
Hosted by the Scottish Government, the Symposium will build on the outcomes of the 30th British-Irish Council Summit, held in Guernsey on 22 June 2018. That Summit highlighted a number of marine environment issues that were of concern to all administrations. Ministers agreed to ensure meaningful and swift action was taken to tackle marine litter around these islands and signal the importance of this issue.
At the Marine Litter Symposium, environment ministers from across the Council’s member administrations are expected to commit to working together, with industry, to develop a solution for the recycling of end-of-life fishing gear.
Members will also commit to co-operative working to further reduce the loss of pre-production plastics, commonly referred to as nurdles, across the supply chain, and also to improve marine litter education for young people, and the fishing industry.
Deputy Young said: “It is vital that Jersey joins the British-Irish Council’s other members from sovereign governments, devolved institutions and crown dependencies to take further, collaborative action to tackle marine litter. I am proud to be representing Jersey as we further develop a course of action for ensuring the protection and preservation of our marine environment.”
