Islanders invited to propose areas for development or protection

02 December 2019

Island Plan

Islanders can now register areas of land in Jersey which they think should be considered for development, or protection from development, in the next Island Plan.

The Call for Sites is open until Friday 14 February and is open to anyone – whether they are the owner, agent, or simply someone who is interested in an area.

The Minister for the Environment, Deputy John Young, said: “Islanders know their local areas best, and we want to use their knowledge to help us design the best plan for Jersey. Identifying land in this way does not determine it future use, but it helps to identify sites in the Island which might be suitable for development or protection from development.

“Land identified through the Call for Sites may or may not be included in the new draft Island Plan, but the land identified through this process will be assessed for its sustainability, suitability and deliverability for different purposes.

“The Island Plan is at the heart of the planning system; it doesn’t just govern where buildings can and can’t be built, but determines how we will protect our natural environment and shape the island that our children will grow up in. This plan is the public’s chance to influence and shape the future and help keep Jersey a unique and special place to live.”

The Call for Sites is the next stage of the review of the Island Plan. All the submissions (but not the identities of the people submitting them) will be published.

Information on the accepted sites (but not the identities of the people submitting them) will be included in the draft Island Plan.

A draft plan will be published for further public consultation in the summer of 2020. The final draft of the Island Plan 2022 – 2030 will be presented to the States Assembly for debate in 2021.

More information and a submission form are available online.
