States Chief Executive, Charlie Parker, has today announced the appointment of a new Group Medical Director for Health and Community Services.
John McInerney has been Acting Group Medical Director since August 2018, having joined the States of Jersey in October 2013 as a Consultant in Emergency Medicine. He was Clinical Director of Jersey Ambulance Service from 2016 as well as Clinical Director for Emergency Care from 2017.
John has previously worked in the UK, Australia and Ireland. Among his previous key roles were Acute Floor Clinical Lead and Consultant in Emergency Medicine for Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, Dublin, and Associate Clinical Professor in Emergency Medicine, University College Dublin, Ireland.
As Group Medical Director, John is responsible for representing patients, with shared responsibility for strategic, governance and operational decisions. He will also lead medical staff across the island within the Health and Community Services portfolio and will work closely with Primary Care partners in driving changes to meet the needs of islanders.

His ability to build relationships across sectors, his knowledge of local health services and his clinical experience gained from working across the world are particularly valuable as we implement our new model of health care for Jersey, led by clinical professionals and supported by a modern, effective, efficient and restructured department.

Dr James Mair, an island GP and member of the Primary Care Panel, who sat on the interview panel, said: “John brings to this appointment a wealth of clinical and managerial experience from his time spent in the UK, Ireland and Australia, and his time in Jersey. He has the drive, wisdom and collaborative approach that will draw policy makers and care professionals together at this pivotal time for health and social care in the island.”
The appointment followed the Jersey Appointments Commission code of conduct for fair and open competition, and was made following a combination of face-to-face interviews and extensive and evidence-based technical and psychometric assessments. The interview panel included subject matter experts and independent Jersey members.
