First social housing provider accredited under Rent Safe Scheme

01 March 2019

Christians Together in Jersey (CTJ) has become the island’s first social housing provider to be accredited under the Rent Safe Scheme.

Accreditation to the voluntary scheme demonstrates that a landlord or agent has ensured their property meets minimum housing standards.

CTJ, which is managed by Voisin Hunter, owns 143 properties, all of which have been awarded ratings of 4 and 5 stars, meaning they meet the Rent Safe Scheme’s highest standards, and the Minister for Children and Housing, Senator Sam Mézec, is meeting CJT to congratulate them.

“I’m delighted that our first social housing provider has committed to the scheme, and that it has shown just how high the standard is that they have reached,” Senator Mézec said. “Everyone in Jersey should have access to affordable, good quality and secure housing. Until now we have had no way of measuring the quality of accommodation, and the Rent Safe Scheme ensures that tenants and landlords can be confident that their homes are safe.”

The accreditation ensures that tenants can be confident that their landlord:

  • takes their tenants’ welfare seriously
  • takes action to resolve issues quickly
  • works to make sure their properties continue to meet recognised housing standards

CTJ will receive a Certificate of Accreditation which will they can provide tenants on request, and will appear alongside other accredited landlords on the Rent Safe register.

Minimum standards for rental homes was agreed in principle in December 2017 with the amendment of the Public Health and Safety (rented dwellings) Law. The States Assembly then approved the law to provide minimum standards in September 2018.
