Jersey’s Education Minister and senior officers are visiting schools to listen to the voice of the child and meet staff on the front-line to hear the real day-to-day issues they face.
As part of the role as Education Minister, Senator Tracey Vallois wants to speak directly to the children and young people and ask them what their top priorities are for wellbeing and education at school.
On Friday, Senator Vallois visited Trinity School with Seán O’ Regan, Group Director of Education, and congratulated the school for their recent Silver award for putting children’s rights at the heart of its ethos and curriculum.
Trinity School received Silver in the Rights Respecting Schools Award, which is an initiative run by UNICEF UK that encourages schools to place the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child at the forefront of learning.
The Minister toured St Martin’s School in the afternoon to see how the building has created new learning and teaching environments for pupils and staff.
Senator Vallois said: “Every school I have visited, so far, has been incredibly welcoming and it was wonderful to see so many excited children proudly showing off their learning. During the morning visit I heard all about Trinity School’s Silver award, which is a great achievement. Later that day I spent some time in St Martin’s School being served in the shop in the Reception class and admiring the Taj Mahal model they created.
“These visits provide us with an opportunity to speak directly to children and young people to hear their voice and find out first-hand what they would like to see addressed for their wellbeing and education at school.
“We are also taking the opportunity to talk to staff on the front-line to discuss the real day-to-day issues they face to deliver our aspirations as a government. We require and need their input on how we move forward.”
Next week, the Minister and senior officers from Children, Young People, Education and Skills will visit Rouge Bouillon School and Springfield School.
