National Youth Agency to visit Jersey

Representatives from the National Youth Agency (NYA) are visiting Jersey this week to join in workshops and discussions on current developments in youth service work across the UK. 

The Chief Executive Officer of the NYA, Leigh Middleton and the Director of Youth Work, Abbee McLatchie will be in Jersey on Wednesday and Thursday this week to discuss youth service developments that influence the work of the Jersey Youth Service.  

Principal Youth Officer, Mark Capern said: “We are honoured to be hosting this visit of the NYA and have our colleagues from the Youth Commission for Guernsey and Alderney join us. This will offer an exciting opportunity to discuss new initiatives, policies and practices to support youth work across the Channel Islands so that our children and young people continue to receive the best services. These two days will be productive and inspirational as we look forward to future developments of island youth work.”

On Thursday representatives from the UK, Guernsey and Jersey will consider the following items:

  • Staff Development
  • Youth Work curriculum development
  • Quality Assurance, and standards
  • Participation standards and young person voice
  • Measuring outcomes of young people

Leigh Middleton, CEO of NYA said: “We are thrilled to share and explore our goals to transform the lives of young people. The Channel Islands can be proud of their commitment to young people and of the quality support that they are providing.

“Young people are the future of our communities and at the heart of both Jersey Youth Service and the work of the NYA. As the national body for youth work in both England and the Commonwealth group of nations, the NYA is honoured to be invited for this formal visit to Jersey.”

The National Youth Agency is the national body for youth work in England who have worked with young people for over 50 years, the influence of their work stretches across the UK and internationally.

Aaron Davies, Service lead for the Youth Commission in Guernsey added “We are delighted to be taking part in the visit of the NYA to the Channel Islands. We look forward to learning more about how this visit can help inform our practices, not only in the Bailiwick of Guernsey, but also how we develop work together with our colleagues in Jersey.”
