Islanders have just one week left to file their tax returns online. There are at least 8,000 taxpayers expected to file online by the 31 July deadline.
Anyone who intends to file their tax return online will need to activate a onegov account and set up a digital ID using Yoti. They will need a smartphone and valid passport to do this.
Customer and Local Services are preparing for at least 5,000 onegov accounts to be activated in the next 7 working days. In some cases, account activation may take a few days if data provided by taxpayers doesn’t match current records and needs to be verified.
Comptroller of Revenue, Richard Summersgill said: “Any Islanders who still have outstanding tax returns will need to allow enough time to set up a onegov account, and a digital ID, including allowing enough time for any data verification to take place.
“There is a step-by-step guidance on the activation process, and I’d urge Islanders to make use of all the resources available online to avoid a late filing penalty.
To date, Revenue Jersey has received 12,500 online returns and 52,000 tax returns in total. There are in total 15,000 returns outstanding, including around 4,000 taxpayers who file late every year, and about 2,000 customers whose tax agents file for them.
Taxpayers who have missed the paper return filing date, but who do not have a smartphone and passport to file online, should submit their return on paper as soon as possible, but will be liable to a late filing penalty.
Customers can appeal against the penalty, by including a letter with their paper return outlining the grave or exceptional circumstances leading to them filing late. Appeals will, as usual, be considered on a case-by-case basis. Full details on appeals against fines can be found on the Government of Jersey website.
