The Government of Jersey is working with Caring Cooks to provide up to 300 two course meals every day to Islanders who might otherwise struggle to access or afford nutritious meals.
Caring Cooks had originally received funding to provide nutritionally-balanced meals for students at Samarès School and Janvrin School.
However, with schools closed and Stay Home rules in effect, part of the Government of Jersey funding has now been repurposed to fund 3 Caring Cooks staff so that the charity can scale up its operation and to provid hot meals to Islanders.
Caring Cooks can deliver meals up to six days a week, Monday to Saturday, and can cater for allergies and vegetarian diets. The charity can also provide microwave-only meals, to make the meals accessible to all, including those who are partially-sighted, or who suffer from arthritis.
Anyone who is concerned that they may not be able to access nutritious meals can call the Coronavirus Helpline on (01534) 445566 or contact their Parish Hall to be referred for meal deliveries.
Caring Cooks also has a network of schools, voluntary organisations and government departments who can refer people to the service.
Minister for Education, Senator Tracey Vallois, said: “This partnership is a great example of the way that Government and the third sector are coming together to support our community during this difficult time. I’m grateful to all the staff, volunteers and supporters who are helping Caring Cooks to continue their fantastic work.”
Melissa Nobrega, founder and Chief Executive of Caring Cooks said: “There are so many reasons that people might be struggling to access nutritious meals right now. Some people may have limited mobility because they’re following Stay Home rules, or may have health problems that mean they can’t go out to shop. Other people may be facing financial hardship due to changes in their employment. We’re proud to be able to carry on our work in keeping the Island well-fed.”
Seán O’Regan, Group Director of Education said: “Having already worked with Caring Cooks on the Samarès School and Janvrin Schools pilot project, we know first-hand the impact of their work. We are proud to be working together to provide vital support for Islanders.”
