To celebrate the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (VE Day), a collection of limited-edition coins has been issued by the Westminster Collection.
Coin collections are proposed by the Westminster Collection and approved by the Government of Jersey for their release. The Treasury Minister, Deputy Susie Pinel signed a Ministerial Decision approving the coin designs for 2020.
VE Day is annually celebrated on 8 May across Europe to remember the day Germany surrendered in 1945. This year marks 75 years since Europe was liberated from the German occupation during the Second World War.
The limited edition coin collection includes six designs focused on contributions made by the Home Front and the celebrations that followed on 8 May 1945 depicting:
- Sir Winston Churchill
- Land Army girls
- Queen Elizabeth II in the Auxiliary Territorial Service
- Fire Fighters during the Blitz
- London street party
- Celebrations in London
Other coins available from the VE collection include a limited-edition penny, a one-off coin design.
Treasurer of the States, Richard Bell, said “These coins are a brilliant example of how Jersey can remember and celebrate the 75th anniversary of Victory Day across Europe. The limited-edition collection will mark this special date for generations to come as Jersey plans for a landmark celebration this year, inclusive of all members of the island community. Later in the year, we will also be releasing special coins to commemorate Liberation day celebrations”
The design features on the six commemorative coins include an engraved V on the coin with the dates 1945-2020 on either side. A colour image is printed in the middle of the V depicting people, actions and resilience that contributed to the victory. The obverse will feature the portrait of Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley.
