Medical Director appointed

05 February 2021

Following a rigorous selection process, interim Medical Director and consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeon, Patrick Armstrong, has been appointed Medical Director for Health and Community Services (HCS).

Patrick has responsibility for leadership of HCS medical colleagues and will work closely with Primary Care partners in driving changes to meet the needs of Islanders.
He will also continue as a member of the HCS Executive team with shared responsibility for strategic, governance and operational decisions.

Caroline Landon, Director General of Health and Community Services, said:
“I’m delighted to confirm that Patrick Armstrong has been appointed Medical Director. We were fortunate to have an incredible shortlist and the process was deliberately challenging to ensure we got the right person for this pivotal role.

“Patrick was rigorously assessed against other very strong applicants and this appointment is a great example of the high calibre of employees that we have in our workforce.

“Patrick was the panel’s unanimous choice and I’m so pleased that he has accepted the role, so that he can continue the phenomenal work he has been doing both within HCS and in his role advising on the Covid-19 pandemic as Chair of STAC (Scientific and Technical Advisory cell).”

Patrick Armstrong, Medical Director, said:
“It is a huge honour to be appointed Medical Director for Health and Community Services in Jersey.
“I look forward to continuing to work with colleagues across Government and leading clinical teams committed to providing world class medical care.

“In the short term, my priorities will be responding to the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as a continued focus on the development of our services and staff so we can deliver the highest quality healthcare for the people of Jersey.”

Patrick was awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list for his services to the community during the pandemic. He has been a consultant for 16 years and has lived and worked in Jersey for the past 5 years.

The appointment followed the Jersey Appointments Commission code of conduct for fair and open competition.
