Jersey Youth Service (JYS) is inviting young people to take part in a walking challenge to raise awareness about
Jersey’s Climate Conversation and help reduce their carbon footprint.
#STEPS4JYS is a month-long competition which invites members of
Jersey Youth Service to do more walking during May, explore the Island, lead healthy lifestyles and learn about the environmental impact of their personal carbon footprint.
To take part, young people need to log their steps using their mobile phone’s step counter, a fitness watch, or freely-available apps, and submit them to their youth worker by 8pm on Friday 28 May.
Prizes are available for the two people who log the most steps, including a Hero Go Pro 8, and a Fitbit Charge 4. The youth club whose members log the most steps will also win a sports bundle, including badminton and rounders sets, basketballs, and footballs.
All prizes are sponsored by local change management consultancy, MasonBreese.
#STEPS4JYS has been planned to coincide with
National Walking Month, which aims to raise awareness of the health, environmental, and financial benefits of choosing walking over driving.
Mark Capern, Principal Youth Officer, said: “As a service, we’re always trying to provide new experiences and learning for our members.
“We’re hoping #Steps4JYS will encourage more young people to explore everything the Island has to offer, while also developing healthy habits, and learning more about their individual carbon footprint.
“I’d like to thank MasonBreese for their support with this competition, which I hope will have a long-lasting impact beyond the month.”
Luke Winter, Director at MasonBreese, said: “We’re proud to be sponsoring #STEPS4JYS. Many people in Jersey have had a challenging year, and it’s taken a real toll on young people. We hope by providing some tempting prizes, we can encourage more young people to get out and get active.”
