Government confirms teacher assessment for all exams

Secondary schools and colleges in Jersey have received further confirmation of the grading process for students this summer.

 

On 4 January, the UK Prime Minister announced that due to COVID-19, students in Years 11 and 13 would be awarded grades this summer using teacher assessments instead of examinations. 

Jersey mirrored the approach and announced on 6 January that decisions taken by the UK Government will also apply to Island students, as Jersey follows the UK examination system. 

This decision applies to all qualifications where there is an opportunity to assess via teacher assessment. This included all GCSE, AS Level, A-Level, iGCSE, and International Baccalaureate qualifications. 

Minister for Children and Education, Deputy Maçon, said: “The Government of Jersey’s position has been clear from the start of the year that examinations will not take place in schools in Summer Term 2021 due to the pandemic. This is to ensure there is a fair and consistent approach for all students in Jersey. 

“Examinations will be awarded using a teacher assessment process. We have reiterated this position to schools following some confusion in the approach of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE), in comparison to the other examination boards. 

“Students have faced so many challenges to their education because of COVID-19 and have coped admirably, so I’m glad we can offer them clarity about how their hard work will be assessed.

“We will continue to work closely with secondary school leaders on the best processes for the award of qualification this summer, under the latest guidance from Ofqual and others.”
