The Government of Jersey is supporting children and young people to celebrate World Book Day on Thursday 4 March, with a range of resources on the
Learning At Home website.
World Book Day was founded by UNESCO in 1995 to encourage young people to discover the pleasure of reading. It is now celebrated in over 100 countries around the world.
To celebrate, school children across the Island will be dressing up as their favourite book characters. Parents are encouraged to share photos on social media with the hashtag #WorldBookDayJsy
The Learning At Home website launched in April 2020 when schools were closed to most children due to the Stay Home Order. The website offers supplementary educational tools and resources to support children’s learning.
Minister for Children and Education, Deputy Jeremy Maçon said: “World Book Day is a wonderful opportunity for Island children to have fun, celebrate the books they love, and hopefully find some new favourites.
“I know many children will be looking forward to wearing their costumes, but these in-school and on-line resources will support children to develop their enjoyment of reading, and their overall academic performance.”
Chief Librarian, Edward Jewell said: “World Book Day is a global celebration of books, and we’re pleased to be able to support children and their families to share their love of reading.
“As well as visiting the Town, Communicare and mobile libraries in person, families can access children’s e-books through
our Overdrive platform. From next week, we’ll also be restarting our Story Time and Baby Bounce & Rhyme sessions at the town library.”
