09 March 2022
Public engagement on assisted dying begins today, to encourage Islanders to share their thoughts, questions, hopes or concerns about the subject.
In November 2021, the States Assembly became the first parliament in the British Isles to decide 'in principle' to permit assisted dying and to make arrangements for the provision of an assisted dying service. The debate was informed by recommendations of the Jersey Assisted Dying Citizens' Jury.
An 'in principle' decision means the States Assembly would like to receive more information before confirming if, and how, assisted dying should be permitted.
The next step is for the States Assembly to consider more detailed proposals in Autumn 2022. These engagement plans seek feedback from Islanders which will inform the proposals and ensure Islander views are being reflected. Additional phases of engagement will follow later in the year.
The engagement includes in-person events and online feedback so Islanders can submit their comments. Islanders can participate in a number of ways:
- by emailing: assisteddying@gov.je
- online through sli.do using the code #AssistedDyingJSY
- by commenting on social media
- in person at the parish hall and library events, which can be booked at Eventbrite:
The engagement will close at the start of April.
