Haute Vallée summer school returns

10 August 2022

Students at Haute Vallée School are taking part in a two-week Summer School to boost their English and Maths skills, and develop their self-confidence and educational engagement.

This week and next, students will spend their mornings in Maths and English lessons, and their afternoons taking part in a range of cultural and adventure activities. This will include visiting Hamptonne and Durrell, and trying kayaking and paddleboarding. Breakfast is included each morning.

The Summer School is funded by the Government’s COVID-19 Catch Up Programme, which aims to offset the impact of COVID on students’ learning, attainment and development.

This is the third year that Haute Vallée has organised a Summer School and roughly 100 students are taking part. This includes students who are eligible for Jersey Premium, those who have special education needs, students who have social, emotional and mental health needs, those who speak English as an additional language and those who have been identified as requiring additional learning support.

After the 2021 Summer School, students showed an average 48% improvement in their Maths skills, and a 16% improvement in their English skills. They also reported feeling a significantly greater enthusiasm to learn, and a greater level of self-confidence. They also recognised an improvement to their Maths and English skills.

Katie Mulligan, School Counsellor and Summer School Organiser said: “It’s wonderful to have the financial support in place to run a third summer school. We see a real difference in the students who take part. It’s a pleasure to see how children develop, not just in their Maths and English skills, but how they develop their confidence, self-esteem, and teamwork.”

A student who provided feedback on the 2021 summer school said: “I made new friends, I am much happier about my Maths and I really enjoyed the fun activities in the afternoon. Plus, I got to go to so many places I’d never been before. It made my summer so much better than it would have been otherwise.”
