A plan to encourage all Islanders to understand, value, care for, and enjoy Jersey's heritage has been unveiled today (Wednesday 4 May).
A Heritage Strategy For Jersey presents a vision for the sector 'to inspire a virtuous circle of understanding, valuing, care and enjoyment of Jersey's heritage, contributing to the Island's unique identity and international relationships, beautiful environment, vibrant healthy community, and sustainable economy, creating a better place to live for everyone, now and in the future'.
The Assistant Minister for Economic Development, Tourism, Sport and Culture, Deputy Kirsten Morel, who has responsibility for heritage, said: "Now that one percent of all annual Government spending goes to arts, heritage and culture, there is greater investment in the sector, and that is why this strategy is so important. It sets longer-term measurable goals and shorter-term programmes which put us in the right direction.
"The strategy's development has been a true partnership, and it enables us all to work towards a common objective. Government plays a vital role in law, policy and funding, and the majority of heritage activity is undertaken by the third sector, private owners, and through international partnerships with multilateral agencies, universities and research organisations."
The strategy, and vision, has been developed by the Heritage Advisory Partnership, which includes the largest heritage organisations, Jersey Heritage Trust, The National Trust for Jersey, and the Société Jersiaise.
The Minister for Economic Development, Tourism, Sport and Culture, Senator Lyndon Farnham, said: "The publication of the Heritage Strategy is the culmination of a great deal of work by people from across several organisations. We should all celebrate their role in ensuring that Jersey's heritage remains a core part of Island life both now and in the future."
