Almost 50 community groups, charities and businesses are supporting the first public event for Jersey Children's Day, next Sunday, 3 July.
Two family fun events will be held in Millbrook Park and Howard Davis Park, where there will be a range of free activities and entertainment for children and young people, including face painting and live music from Youth Arts Jersey.
Jersey Children's Day is an annual event held on 3 July, following a recommendation by a Citizen's Panel that responded to the Independent Jersey Care Inquiry.
Jersey Heritage is providing free entry for under-18's to all their sites on Children's Day.
The Bosdet Foundation are providing free access at Jump Jersey on Children's Day to 580 children and organisations. They have also booked that date for their open day for Camp Bosdet at Brig Y Don.
ArtHouse Jersey are working on an exciting project in primary and secondary schools, which will be unveiled on Children's Day at Millbrook Park. They will be assisted by Woodshack, at Jersey Employment Trust.
Events will be held at:
- Millbrook Park – 9.30 – 12.00
- Howard Davis Park – 14.00 – 18.00
Families are encouraged to bring picnics and there will be free refreshments in the 1,000 goodie bags, along with a £5 food voucher to spend on food and soft refreshments at participating vendors at the events.
Rob Sainsbury, Interim Director General of Children, Young People, Education and Skills, said: "An enormous amount of hard work has gone into planning Jersey Children's Day this year and we have been overwhelmed by the support we've received from so many businesses, services and charities. It's a true testament to the incredible community spirit that exists in the Island and we're really grateful to everyone taking part.
"Schools have been busy working with ArtHouse Jersey on an exciting project to promote children's rights and we are looking forward to unveiling their work on Jersey Children's Day."
Elaine Walker, Associate Director at Children, Young People, Education and Skills, said: "More than 300 children, young people and families voted for a fun family event in Howard Davis and Millbrook Parks with live entertainment, activities and information about various support services available. The Children's Day Steering Group have been working hard over the last few weeks to plan a fun day for children, young people, and families.
"The day is all about children and young people and the importance of their voices being heard. It's also an opportunity to ensure that lessons learned from the Independent Jersey Care Inquiry are never forgotten and to look forward to brighter futures for children and young people. "
Cheyenne O'Connor, of the Independent Survivors' Steering Group, said: "It's great to see that so many local organisations and charities are taking part in Children's Day and celebrating the children in our Island.
"The day will be an opportunity to reflect on the past but will also give young people and families a fun day out. Families are encouraged to come down with picnics and take part in the free activities that will be running throughout both events.
"We need the whole Island's support to get behind Children's Day. It not only takes a village – it takes an Island to raise a child."
