The Chief Minister, Deputy Kristina Moore, and Chief Executive Suzanne Wylie represented Jersey at
the British-Irish Council (BIC) Summit in Blackpool from Thursday 10 – Friday 11 November.
The 38
th Summit meeting was hosted by the Minister for Intergovernmental Relations, Michael
Gove MP, and brought together the representatives of BIC member administrations, including the
Irish Government; UK Government; Scottish Government; Northern Ireland Executive; Welsh
Government; Isle of Man Government; and the Governments of Jersey & Guernsey. The summit was
also attended by Rishi Sunak, the first time a British PM has been to BIC since 2007.
The theme of the summit was sustainable growth and regeneration.
After the summit, the Chief Minister, Deputy Kristina Moore said:
“This was my second summit representing Jersey, following on from the Summit held by our
Guernsey colleagues in July of this year. This year’s theme - sustainable growth and regeneration –
is topical and of particular significance to Jersey.
“As a government we continue to advance and develop our Carbon Neutral Roadmap. We are
focused on facilitating sustainable growth by ensuring our key sources of emissions – transport and
buildings – are minimised. It was insightful to hear how other member jurisdictions are tackling
what is a shared challenge, and how Jersey can learn from their successes moving forward with a
focus on resilience we remain committed to making Jersey a welcoming community for all.
“The British Irish Council remains an important forum that brings together member administrations
to discuss, and address, the challenges facing us all. I thank the Minister for hosting and UK
government for their hospitality, and look forward to hosting the summer summit in Jersey next
year to further strengthen our relationships with all Council members".
The Chief Executive, Suzanne Wylie, said:
“It was great to experience the work of the British Irish Council firsthand again, following on from
the Summit in July. It is crucial Jersey continues to maintain representation at what is an important
international forum, one that brings together some of our closest partners to tackle the biggest
challenges of our time.
“With COP27 underway right now, the theme – sustainable growth and regeneration – was timely
and helped to illustrate that the challenges Jersey faces in the months and years ahead are
universal. BIC provides us with a regular opportunity to work closely with colleagues in the UK,
Ireland, and the Crown Dependencies across a wide range of work sectors”
