Social Work graduates from University College Jersey (UCJ) are celebrating a 100% pass
rate, with almost half of those graduates receiving a First-Class Honours.
At UCJ’s graduation ceremony today (Friday 7 October), five Social Work BA (Hons)
students are graduating with 2:1 and four are graduating with First-Class Honours.
The course was first launched in Jersey in 2019 and is accredited by the University of
Sussex. This means that students at UCJ study the same material, sit the same assessments
and exams, and are awarded the same professional accreditation as their counterparts at
the University of Sussex.
Introducing this degree course on-Island was the third recommendation made by the
Independent Jersey Care Inquiry, with an aim to build a highly skilled workforce of social
workers and reduce the Island’s reliance on temporary and agency staff.
This year, UCJ received an overall pass rate of 98% across all their courses. The UCJ team
has been delivering degree-level education to Jersey students for over 20 years and has a
growing portfolio of higher education programmes on Island - including BA (Hons) Sports
Coaching and Development, BSc (Hons) Digital Technology being introduced this year, and
BA (Hons) Finance and Accounting planned for next year.
Assistant Minister for Children and Education, Connétable Richard Vibert, said: “I would like
to congratulate UCJ and our local students who are graduating with well-deserved
achievements.
“This has been a significant step forward in building a home-grown workforce of social
workers and three years later, we now have nine highly-skilled graduates who will be able
to support children, young people, and vulnerable adults.”
