Eco-Permit scheme update

22 December 2023

The Eco-Permit scheme will continue to provide free or half-price parking for electric vehicles in Jersey until the end of 2024, the Minister for Infrastructure has confirmed.

The scheme has been in place since 2008 to support the early uptake of electric vehicles. It has always been agreed on a year-by-year basis.

However, with the introduction of the Electric Vehicle Purchase Incentive this year, and the sharp increase in the number of electric vehicles, the Minister for Infrastructure, Deputy Tom Binet, and the Minister for the Environment, Deputy Jonathan Renouf, have come to the joint decision that the scheme will not continue in its current format after 31 December 2024.

This means, for example, an electric vehicle purchased in early July 2024 will only be guaranteed free parking for the six months to the end of 2024. Half-price Eco-Permits are expected to come to an end on this date (31/12/24) as well.

As electric vehicles become more popular, the revenue from parking receipts, which could otherwise be funding infrastructure improvements, decreases. Ministers will continue to work together in 2024 to review how best to support Islanders to make sustainable and low-carbon transport choices, prioritising walking and cycling initiatives.
