Language Policy Conference (19-20 October)

13 October 2023

A free conference on language policy, minority languages and multilingualism will take place at Hautlieu School on Thursday 19 and Friday 20 October in partnership with Oxford Brookes University and the British Irish Council.

To find out more about the conference, please visit: Jersey Language Policy for Education Impact Event (OCTOBER 19-20, 2023) – Inclusive approaches to language policy in education (jerseylanguagepolicyconference2023.uk)

The conference comes more than a year on from the launch of the Language Policy for Jersey Education, which celebrated its first anniversary in May of this year.

The Language Policy provides a framework to support children to develop English language proficiency, as well as other languages, including Jèrriais. It includes a commitment to improve support for the 27% of all school pupils who are multilingual learners (MLL) - children and young people who have English as an additional language.

Day 1 (19 October) focuses on indigenous and minority languages, including Jèrriais. Speakers include:

  • Jeremy Miles, Welsh Government Minister for Education and Welsh Language
  • Dr Eowyn Crisfield, Oxford Brookes and Consultant for the Language Policy
  • Jean Le Maistre, a native Jèrriais speaker and voice of Jèrriais for uTalk

Day 2 (20 October) focuses on learning and teaching languages in schools.

Registration for each day is available here
