Update on RAAC in Hospital

06 October 2023

Health and Community Services has given an update on RAAC in the Hospital.

As of 4pm on Thursday 5 October, Health and Community Services can confirm that following a site-wide investigation, structural engineers have so far given verbal updates that no further reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) has been found. The structural engineers have also confirmed that, given significant defects were not detected during the visual surveys, there is no immediate need to consider closing areas of the hospital or installing emergency propping.

The Estates team is now working closely with the independent structural engineers to plan further measured surveys of the three confirmed areas – Ear Nose and Throat (ENT), part of Pathology, and the boiler house roof slabs. The surveys will need to be planned around the operational needs of the three departments. These will take place next week.

These inspections will help to develop a more detailed understanding of the overall condition of the RAAC, and to identify any future maintenance requirements to manage the RAAC in place, while the Hospital remains on this site.

The final structural engineers' report will follow in due course.
