New retail industry roadmap published

30 December 2024

New opportunities for growth and points of guidance for Jersey's retail sector have been outlined in a Government report released today (Monday 30 December).

Building on the 2021 Interim Retail Strategy, the “Jersey: Future-fit Retail Roadmap" encourages businesses to diversify their offerings and embrace innovation, as part of work to revitalise the town centre.

The Minister for Sustainable Economic Development, Deputy Kirsten Morel, said: “With more than 900 businesses, 7,000 jobs, and a contribution of £375 million in Gross Value Added (GVA), the retail sector is integral to Jersey's economy and prosperity.

“As we come to the end of the year's most important retail season, I'm pleased that the Government is working with the industry to make it future fit. To do that, in a changing retail landscape, we all need to reimagine how people shop. Success in transforming Jersey's retail sector is not just about increasing shop numbers or providing financial support, it is about building on our already vibrant, community-focused environment while enhancing our quality of life and strengthening our economy."

The key strategic goals are:

  1. Vibrant: Transform St Helier into a bustling retail and cultural hub by addressing vacancies, enhancing public spaces, and collaborating with arts and heritage sectors. This includes supporting a vibrant night-time economy.
  1. Customer-First: Prioritise residents' and visitors' needs by promoting convenience and seamless experiences.
  1. Productive: Encourage businesses to adopt automation, build a resilient supply chain and reduce reliance on imports while addressing the climate crisis.

The report underpins part of the Government's Common Strategic Policy, as it works to strengthen business through skill development and support the community through revitalisation.
