Free GP visits for students over 18

01 November 2024

Students aged over 18 in full-time education can now access free GP surgery consultations in the Island through a new scheme launched by the Minister for Social Security.

The scheme aims to prioritise students’ health and wellbeing by providing access to medical advice at a GP surgery without worrying about costs. This new scheme will be funded by the Health Insurance Fund, emphasising the Government’s commitment to supporting students’ health and wellbeing needs.

Students at the majority of Jersey secondary schools, Highlands College and those registered with Student Finance will automatically be enrolled on the scheme. Other students, including those over the age of 18 who are at Beaulieu, can apply by emailing the Health Benefits Team at CLS, esshealth@gov.je

The scheme is designed to remove the standard fee for a face-to-face consultation or a remote consultation for students in the Island with a local GP, Practice Nurse, Paramedic or Health Care Assistant during normal surgery hours. It is available to students when they are in Jersey including during term breaks but does not extend to periods when the student is off-Island.

Home visits, out-of-hours services (Jersey Doctors on Call), and additional services such as blood tests, urine tests, pregnancy tests, referral letters and other ancillary services are outside of the scheme.

Minister for Social Security, Deputy Lyndsay Feltham said: “I am pleased that we have delivered on this States Assembly commitment, and I thank Deputy Carina Alves for bringing the original proposition. Reducing GP fees is a Government priority, helping to ease financial pressures on households. It is important that we continue to improve access to primary care services and expand this to include students.”
