Ministers discuss renewables at British-Irish Council Summit in the Isle of Man

24 June 2024

The Chief Minister, Deputy Lyndon Farnham, and Minister for External Relations Deputy Ian Gorst represented Jersey at the British-Irish Council (BIC) Summit in the Isle of Man from Thursday 20 to Friday 21 June.

The 41st Summit meeting was hosted by the Chief Minister of the Isle of Man, Alfred Cannan MHK, and brought together the representatives of the BIC administrations, including the Irish Government; Welsh Government; Scottish Government; UK Government; Northern Ireland Executive and the Governments of Jersey and Guernsey.

The theme of the summit was Unlocking the Economic and Social Opportunities of Renewables Across These Islands.

After the summit, the Chief Minister, Deputy Lyndon Farnham said: “The theme – the opportunities presented by renewables – is both topical and of enormous significance. The drive for renewables presents genuine opportunities but also significant challenges and it was useful to be able to share our perspectives from across the different administrations.

“The British Irish Council remains an important forum that brings together member administrations to discuss, and address, the joint challenges that we all face. Deputy Gorst and I had many useful conversations with Ministers from across the British Isles in the margins of the summit, always a valuable element to these events.

“It was particularly pleasing to be able to welcome back Ministers from Northern Ireland to the Council for the first time since 2022, this is an important landmark in the full restoration of the Good Friday agreement institutions.

“I would like to thank Chief Minister Cannan for the kind hospitality that we were shown throughout the Summit.”
