Tyre safety initiative next week

03 October 2024

A tyre safety initiative will take place on Monday 7 October at Les Jardins Car Park, and on Tuesday 8 October at Patriotic Car Park, helping the Government of Jersey better understand the condition of vehicle tyres in Jersey.

All vehicles parked in Les Jardins Car Park or Patriotic Car Park on the respective days will be subject to a free tyre check. Islanders can also visit the car parks to have their tyres checked on a first-come, first-served basis, without needing to park.

Staff from DVS and I&E’s Road Safety team will receive training from UK charity, TyreSafe, and Translogik on how to use tyre measurement scanners. TAF Tyres, who is an official supporter of TyreSafe, will also have staff on-site offering expert advice and services to Islanders with tyres that need changing.

Please note that there will be no penalties for worn tyres, but DVS will recommend replacements if needed.

The Minister for Infrastructure, Constable Andy Jehan, said: “This is a great opportunity for commuters to get their tyres checked, for free, while also supporting us in gathering some data on the condition of tyres on our roads.

“Driving a vehicle comes with responsibilities, and the general advice is that tyres should be checked once a month or before a long journey. Unfortunately, I’m sure many Islanders are not getting them checked regularly enough, resulting in some potentially dangerous vehicles on our roads. This initiative is all about increasing awareness on tyre safety and ultimately ensuring vehicle owners are informed and safe on the roads.”

Stuart Lovatt, Chair of TyreSafe, said: "TyreSafe is delighted to be working with the Jersey Government to help raise awareness of the importance of tyre safety on the Island. This partnership aligns perfectly with our mission to raise awareness of tyre safety. Together, we can make a real difference by reducing tyre-related incidents and ensuring that drivers are equipped with the knowledge they need to keep themselves and others safe on the road."
