For the purposes of the Island Plan the natural environment is considered to be represented by the Island's countryside and coast. This section examines the natural environment in greater detail.

Historic environment
The historic environment of the Island is a finite resource and an irreplaceable asset.They can lose their particular interest by:
- unsuitable alteration
- demolition
- excavation

Built environment
This section of the Island Plan deals with the built environment ie those parts of Jersey that are essentially urban or suburban in character. The built environment has delivered by far the most development in the past, and is likely to provide the greatest opportunities for future development during the lifetime of this Island Plan, through the processes of regeneration and renewal.
