It was warmer than the 1991 to 2020, 30-year average of 12.39°C. The average annual temperature takes an average of all days throughout the year, including night time minimum temperatures and daily maximum temperatures.

The average temperature in 2024 adds another stripe to our climate record, it's another darker red shade equal to that of 2015.

  • the average daily maximum temperature was 0.32°C higher than the long-term 30 year average
  • the average night time minimum temperature was 0.81°C above the long-term 30 year average

The record warmest year was 2022 with a mean daily air temperature of 13.56°C.

1963 was the coldest year on record with a mean daily air temperature of 10.20°C

Rainfall

The rainfall total for 2024 was 929.0mm. This is slightly above average when compared to the 30-year long term average of 918.2mm.

For each degree that our atmosphere warms, the atmosphere can hold 7% more moisture.

190 rain days were recorded in 2024, where at least 0.2mm of rain was recorded. This compares with a 30-year long term average of 188.2 days per year. The wettest day of the year was 18 November with 32.0mm of rain recorded.

2020 was the wettest year on record with 1,178.4mm of rainfall.

About the Jersey warming stripes

The Warming Stripes were created by Professor Ed Hawkins from the University of Reading and show how temperature has changed over a period of time. Jersey’s warming stripes are very similar to stripes using data from around the World.

Each stripe represents the average temperature for a single year, relative to the average temperature taken from the 30-year long term average from 1971 to 2000. The colours are either shades of blue (cooler than the average), or red (warmer than average), the darker the colour the cooler or warmer the year.

The Warming Stripes are painted on a mural at the Waterfront, as a visual reminder of climate change.

Further information

Maison St Louis Observatory has recorded meteorological data since 1 January 1894.

The observatory makes an important contribution to studies of climate change and its impact on the Channel Islands.

Records of meteorological elements are also made at several other on-Island and offshore sites.

Data referred to on this page has been recorded at the following sites:

  • temperature and rainfall at the Maison St. Louis Observatory
  • sunshine at the Fort Regent Signal Station
  • sea temperature at St. Helier Harbour

The Jersey Met provide live weather updates, as well as a daily weather summary. Environmental Health provide live air quality updates. The Jersey Met also provide weather forecasts for six days into the future.

Monthly weather data from 2009 onwards is available on the Jersey Met climate page. Information on the climate crisis and the government response to it can be found on the climate emergency page.
