Toxic chemical releases and how to protect yourself

Chemical incidents considered an emergency in Jersey include a toxic chemical release and major land, air, or water contamination.

If you think you've been contaminated by a toxic chemical follow the Remove, Remove, Remove guidance from NARU.

If you're told that there's a cloud of hazardous material in your area, take the following steps to protect yourself and your family:

  • go indoors, stay there and tune into local radio and television for further information
  • close all doors and windows, shut down all ventilation and air conditioning systems and block obvious draughts. Unblock these vents before switching everything back on
  • extinguish all flames, for example, pilot lights
  • get out your home emergency pack
  • cover or put all food in a closed, sealed cupboard or container
  • wash and peel all fruit and vegetables before eating
  • do not try to collect your children from school unless told to do so. They'll be looked after by the school
  • do not go outside until you're told to do so. Even if everything appears normal
  • do not use rainwater. For example, water butts should be discarded
  • keep animals inside and do not stroke or pat any animals that have been outside
  • listen for public announcements. They'll inform you when it's safe to go outside, and any other actions you should take
