Jersey Customs and Immigration Service deal with all naturalisation and registration applications for Jersey residents.

The British Government is responsible for the laws covering British citizenship through the British Nationality Act 1981 (BNA) which applies to Jersey.

You need to meet certain rules before you can apply. These are available on the GOV.UK website. This guidance also applies to applications made in Jersey.

Apply for naturalisation

You can apply for naturalisation if you:

• have lived in the UK or Islands (Jersey, Guernsey or Isle of Man) for 5 years or more
• hold indefinite leave to remain or settled status granted under the EU settlement scheme
  
• hold indefinite leave to remain (ILR) and you must have lived in the UK or Islands for a period of 12 months or more after being granted ILR
• meet the requirements of Knowledge of Language and Life
  

You may also be eligible to apply for naturalisation if you're married to a British citizen and:

• have lived in the UK or Islands for 3 years or more
• hold indefinite leave to remain or settled status granted under the EU settlement scheme
• meet the requirements of Knowledge of Language and Life
  

You'll be naturalised in the same name and gender as it appears in your non-British passport. If you wish to naturalise using a different name and gender you must first change these details in your non-British passport. It is the same policy when applying for a British passport.

Submitting your application

If you're a Jersey resident and wish to apply to naturalise as a British citizen, you must submit your naturalisation application to the Jersey Customs and Immigration Service by completing the following steps:

Step 1

Complete the Become a British citizen by naturalisation (form AN) on GOV.UK. Make sure you read the guidance notes.

Step 2

Complete the Naturalisation Application Jersey Pack.

Step 3

Apply to naturalise as a British citizen

Fill out the form above, where you will be able to upload your supporting documents and make payment.

When completed a PDF copy of this application will be sent electronically to the Jersey Customs and Immigration Service along with your uploaded supporting documents.

Step 4

Submit a PDF copy of the Jersey online form, form AN from GOV.UK and your previous and current passports by post to:

Additional information

If we require additional information, an Officer will contact you using the information provided in your application.

Original documents submitted in support of your application will be returned to you within 3 weeks from the date the application is received. You'll be notified either by phone or email when your documents are ready for collection.

Registration

Registration is where someone can gain British citizenship, or other British nationality status.

It is only available if you have connections to the UK or Islands, the British Overseas Territories, or Hong Kong.

You need to download, print and complete the Jersey naturalisation pack and Form MN1 (not the online form) below. The documents explain what you’ll need to submit with your application. Applications should be submitted in the post to Immigration Casework, Maritime House, La Route Du Port Elizabeth, St Helier JE1 1JD. Please note that this building is not open to the public.

The details that you wish to register in must match the name and gender in your non-British passport. If it doesn't, change the details on your non-British passport before you apply for registration.

Duplicate Naturalisation and Registration certificates

If you naturalised or registered as a British Citizen in Jersey you can apply for a duplicate certificate. Applications should be submitted in the post to Immigration Casework, Maritime House, La Route Du Port Elizabeth, St Helier JE1 1JD. Please note that this building is not open to the public.

If you did not naturalise or register as a British Citizen in Jersey you'll need to apply to the UK for a duplicate certificate.

Proof that you’re not a British citizen

To get a passport in another country, you may need proof that you’re not a British citizen by registration or naturalisation in the UK. You can get this proof by applying to the Home Office.

You should download and print form NQ below. You must complete both parts of the form and send the completed form, fee and payment slip to:
