About the consultation

An internal review of Fire Safety legislation in June 2010 highlighted the need to modernise the Petroleum (Jersey) Law 1984 and its associated regulations.

It is proposed to amend the petroleum licensing fee structure currently used by the States of Jersey Fire and Rescue Service to incorporate fairer and more proportionate charges for the storage and dispensing of petroleum spirits.

These new charges will better reflect the work undertaken by the organisation in administering the Petroleum (Jersey) Law 1984 and will help enable the States of Jersey Fire and Rescue Service to undertake specialist inspections of the larger storage sites and carry out appropriate regular training and exercises for petroleum incidents.

This proposed change will help ensure that the States of Jersey Fire and Rescue Service:

  • provides a more robust mechanism for ensuring those premises with a petroleum licence maintain conformity with the law
  • has a fee structure which reflects the regulatory work undertaken, and is both proportionate and fair for the stakeholders and clients
  • maintains the Island’s reputation as a safe and well regulated jurisdiction
