Digital Leadership

Our new leadership programmes launched in 2016 have started to lay the foundations for digital leadership skills.

What is 'digital'?

'Digital' is a term that means different things to different people. A good definition is “Applying the culture, practices, processes and technologies of the Internet-era to respond to people’s raised expectations.”

Digital is moving from the sidelines and becoming the default way that many government services are delivered. Perhaps surprisingly though, until this project started, no civil servants had received any training on how to lead a digital organisation. This is by no means unique to Jersey - businesses and government across the world are having to catch up with the changes that technology is having in their organisations.

Why do we need digital leadership skills?

Digital has changed the way most of us shop, bank, arrange travel, study, talk to friends and family, read books, listen to music, and watch films. It will increasingly change the way that people expect to deal with government.

Some people are 'digital natives' having grown up with the Internet. Others are 'digital immigrants' and are at different stages of adapting to the digital world. It will be increasingly important that those at the top of the organisation have a strong understanding of digital concepts and the benefit that they bring.

Challenges we face

  • Across the States of Jersey there are about 300 managers to be trained. This will take time.
  • The digital landscape changes all the time, so we need to encourage staff to learn on an ongoing basis rather than rely on formal training.

What's next?

  • The "Thriving In A Digital Culture" module module in the Inspiring Managers course has been successfully piloted with one cohort and will be part of that training programme from now on
  • Managers taking part in the Managers To Leaders course will attend the same one-day "Thriving in a Digital Culture" workshop 
  • Identify managers who really 'get' digital, to represent their departments in a digital leaders forum that will help steer the digital agenda across the States of Jersey
